Founded at Lowestoft in 1975, we are a group of keen amateur genealogists whose objectives are to promote and encourage the study of family history, genealogy, heraldry and local history with particular reference to Suffolk; and to promote the preservation, security and accessibility of archive material.
The Society Today
Members of the Society are transcribing and indexing Parish Register entries of Baptisms, Marriages and Burials. Some of our hardier members can also be found on sunny afternoons recording the vanishing Monumental Inscriptions on gravestones. This helps preserve the original records and makes them available to all, either via our Search Services or as CD publications from our Shop.
We also have a collection of reference books, transcripts and other documents which can be studied in our Library at the Suffolk Record Office in Ipswich.
The Society has about 2000 members worldwide who either have ancestors from Suffolk or who currently reside there, or both! We are always pleased to welcome new members and for those wishing to join the Society, information can be found on the Membership page.
Every new member receives a Presentation Pack containing information about Suffolk and the Society, including the opportunity to submit Members' Interests for inclusion here on the website.
Each quarter members receive our journal, Suffolk Roots which is packed with news, articles, letters, important little snippets of information and much much more.
Members are welcome to attend meetings at any of our seven groups. Most groups have ten meetings annually with a varied programme of speakers or events, where help with your family tree research will be available.
